Budi Utomo, the first contemporary organization that marked a major change in the history of the Indonesian national movement, was founded on May 20, 1908 by intellectuals from the country. The purpose of this study is to examine the contributions of Budi Utomo and indigenous peoples to the development of national identity in the early 20th century. This study examines Budi Utomo's actions, beliefs, and tactics in the areas of social activism, education, and culture using qualitative methodology and historical perspectives. The findings of this study show that, although only applicable to the Javanese aristocrats and elitists, Budi Utomo succeeded in raising national consciousness through its derivative organizations. The active participation of indigenous peoples shows how imperial pressures and internal consciousness combined to create national identity. In promoting national identity throughout the colonial era, this study highlights the importance of education, political engagement, and historical awareness
